Visa and Entry Requirements

Malaysia is a popular study destination among international students because of world-class universities, very stable political environment conducive for higher studies in Malaysia, low study cost and easy study visa options. All international students need a Student Pass to study in Malaysia at all levels of education. In order to apply for Student pass in Malaysia, students should have a valid letter of admission for a full-time programme from any of the higher education provider in Malaysia. Applications for Student Pass should be submitted at least one month before the course starts and not more than two months.


Students have to receive the Unconditional Letter of offer from chosen university before they can apply for a visa. The student can apply for Visa 3 months prior to the course start date.

Step 1:

Visa counseling after receiving Unconditional Letter of offer from a university approved by Ministry of Education Malaysia.

Step 2:

Gather visa documents.

  • Valid passport
  • Visa application fee
  • Unconditional Letter of the offer (from the University).
  • Passport-sized photographs
  • Medical Report
  • Proof of English language proficiency ( IELTS/TOEFL/any other valid test approved results)
  • Academic documents
  • Relevant work experience documents.

Step 3:

Visa application of international students enrolling to public and private Universities and Colleges will be sent to the University/College and the visa application will be submitted by the institution directly to Education Malaysia Global Service (EMGS).

Step 4:

Generally, the Malaysia student pass takes about 2 to 3 weeks to process.

Step 5:

Let the applicant know the decision over the study permit application. The student will be receiving a copy of the approval letter from Education Malaysia Global Service (EMGS).

International students have Visa on Arrival facility in Malaysia. Upon arrival, Students have to submit their passport, 1 photograph and a copy of the approval letter from EMGS to the immigration department to get the visa stamped.

Benefits of student pass

Dependant Pass:

The Student Pass allows Masters and PhD students to bring their dependents to Malaysia during the course of their study. Each dependent is issued a Dependent Pass that is valid for a period of up to 12 months. Dependent list includes Spouse, children, mother and father only.

Multiple Entry Visa (MEV):

Student and Dependent Passes are Multiple Entry Visas (MEV), which allows the visa holders to make unrestricted travel between their home country and Malaysia.
